If so, how to you keep the upper in place without putting too much pressure and possibly damaging the upper?  Is there some kind of rubber padding that I should look for?  i want to get one to assist me in taking on and off the barrel nut.

you can make barrel blocks for your vise using wood, but the action vise block is a better idea.
