Hi,

what cal jag do I use for my .223 barrel, and what does a jag do that a pach loop dosn't?

Also can I use a .22 cal brush in a .223 barrel or do I need a .223 brush?

i would buy a packet (20) .223 brushes, a few jags and a big bag of patches.  the brushes seem to "wear out" faster than 30 cal brushes.

I'll stock up on those.

A .22 jag and .22 [b]rifle[b] brushes will do you fine.  If they’re described as being for a .223, that’s fine too.

Obviously, make sure their threads match your cleaning rod.  Try to get brushes that are all brass, if you can.

Typically, when using a jag you push the patch through the bore and it drops off as it exits the barrel.  Thus you don’t wind up pulling any crud that’s on the patch back into the bore like you do with a loop.

Also a jag causes the patch to apply a more uniform pressure in the bore than does a loop (though I personally don’t think this is a big deal unless you’re using abrasives).

My mistake – what I should have said was try to get brushes made entirely of phosphor bronze (the bristles)and brass (the other parts).

199, whats the purpos of phosphor bronze bristles, is that what most bristles are made of.

My understanding is that phosphor bronze is a bit harder than regular bronze and thus makes for a better brush.
