Hi,

I was cleaning my AR last night and I wiped some grime off of my charging handle with a rag with some light CLP.  When I did this, the finish simply came off of a large stretch of the charging handle?

My AR is a BM shorty carbine which has been a great rifle.

What's the deal?

The carbon came off where the finish had previously wore off.

Do you lube the charging handle?  How long have you been shooting this rifle?  Was the finish still completely there, the last time you cleaned it?  How often do you clean your rifle?

If this is a new rifle, or you keep the charging handle lubed, then I doubt it is due to wear.  I did see another post about someone who was having problems with the anodizing flaking off the inside of his receiver, so it could be a bad finish job.  Call bushmaster and see what they have to say.

Don't worry about it. Metal contact/friction is inevitable for the charging handle. The more you shoot/charge, the more the finish will wear. Pefectly normal. Same thing with mag wells and magazine bodies.
