Oh really, well what is it inside the buffer that makes that noise? It sounds like a weight in there.

It sounds like a weight in there. That's because...there is a weight in there. Depending on the specific buffer, it contains steel and/or tungsten weights.

The buffer has three steel insert discs with thin layers between them, which allows the buffer to act like a dead blow hammer on both the rearward and forward end of strokes.
In the rearward dead blow stall effect, it allows the mag more time to recover for better feeding. In the forward stroke dead blow effect, it keeps the carrier from bouncing back, and although a waste on semi rifle, in full auto rigs, prevents bolt bounce. |

OK well thanks for the info. The other two buffers I have don't make that noise, one is for a carbine and the other for a standard rifle. Theyre both DPMS so I was wondering why that particular one did, its quite noisy especially in the rifle.

Punch the buffer bumper roll pin out, pull the parts and add a light layer of CLP to them to quiet the buffer down a bit if needed. Chances are this one had dry parts, while the other that yo may have still have protection grease on the parts when they where installed (used to keep the parts from rusting in storage before being assembled into the buffer)
As for the quiet buffers that really scare me, it's the clone knock off ones that are filled with shot instead of the discs. The don't dead blow blow worth a dam, most of the time, under weight as well. |

Thanks for the advice the weights in the buffer were dry and after putting a light coating on them they did quiet down a lot.
