What's the right way to measure a 1913 rail to see if its indeed within spec, and what is the proper
instrument for the task?

Thanks gents.....

get the spec (I KNOW its out there, if you can't find it, shoot me an IM with your email and I'll see if I can dig the pdf I've got up and email it to ya)

Check dimensions on drawing against your rail to see if they're within the +/- as noted in the spec.

Good set of dial calipers should take care of most measurements for ya

Ahh just found THIS:

http://www.biggerhammer.net/picatinny/

Question: if there is a minus behind the listed dimension, does that mean for that particular
measurement there is only a minus tolerance allowed and not anything in the other direction?
I'm obviously not experience at reading these types of documents so.

For instance it looks like the width of the rail from edge to edge is listed as:

.835-.005

So, that translates to a range of .830 to .835 right?

Rodger to the rescue!

Mostly I wanted to check slot depth, slot width, and the width of the rail itself fore to aft.

I would imagine the guages allow you to check the angles on the rail, or at least I'm guessing.

Tweak, just for reference purposes, since I doubt I'm gonna run across a set of gauges: can you describe what they look like and how they work? I would imagine I'm not the only one that is curious about this.

Thanks man!
