Gentlemen;

I am getting close to finishing my first AR15.  This is my first experience with this type of gun.  I just received a RRA 24" varmint upper which will be used on my 0% forged lower.  My question is which position should the dust cover be held when not snaped closed over the ejection port.  Mine moves freely after the rearward movement of the bolt opens it, but it looks like the spring on the pin that the dust cover pivots on should be holding it either clear of the ejection port or against it when it is not snaped shut.  If this is true which way is correct or is it good as is?

Thank you.

The spring will hold it open.  On the carrier, there is a indent that will snap it open when the bolt/carrier comes back during unlock.

For the most part, just leave the cover open when shooting, then close the bolt and then the cover to store the rifle..

P.S. If the cover is closed with the bolt back/removed, when the bolt comes forward to lock, it will just pop the cover open.
