I'm building a run of the mill AR (i.e. nothing special) and wondered about using the Adams Arms bolt carrier.

I realize that they are made for use with their piston systems (and my build is direct impingement/standard), but in picking one up from a friends rifle it seemed to have the same dimensions with it's integral gas key
(I didn't have another rifle to compare it to).

Will an Adams Arms bolt carrier group work in a standard AR rifle?
I did a search here, but no joy.

I have one for a piston carbine and the carrier is milled on the carrier (i.e. one piece) and I'm gonna say that it won't work with out problems. If your asking if it'll run with no problems in a standard upper (i.e. a1, a2, flattop), it's works like a champ.  I'll take a pic and post it.

In a word, no. The key on an Adams carrier is solid faced which allows the piston to strike it squarely. Standard carrier keys are hollowed out and the gas tube fits inside of them. The gas would not be able to move the carrier as most of the gas would end up going past the key on an adams bolt. Standard keys contain the gas as it exits the gas tube and pushes the bolt back.

Very clever idea about the integral gas key. It's a shame no one else created one for standard AR rifles.

not to be a smart ass... but building a DI bolt carrier with integral gas key is one of those things inexperienced engineers draw as a solid model and then have a machinist tell them it can't be made.............

No it won't work.......in a DI system the bolt is actually the piston......in the adams arms the piston is mounted above the barrel.....totally incompatable systems.
