I just chopped off my lug and pinned my brake.  Hit it up with some cold blue, but, it's slightly shiny and not exactlly "black".

Is there a certain brand that works better?  Or should I use some other process?

ETA:  I use that "blue" bottle of Super Cold Blue.  Sorry, forgot the brand name...

Yeah, I've done this.  It's kinda reached it's peak of darkness.

I heard a gunsmith saying to heat the metal up a little before applying it..... like hair dryer heat, not blow torch!

Thanks!!  I'll put the hot air gun on it tonight and let you know.

I have had good luck with this technique and birchwood casey cold blue.  But the black does not last much, at least not in friction prone parts like sights, etc.

Should I remove the existing bluing before doing this, or heat and go right over it?

Now just make sure to oil the shit out of it, and if possible let it set in oil over night or longer.  Helps to reduce and possible rusting as some of the cold blues seem to promote a little.

FWIW, I've heard that G96 has a cold blue product that works particularly well.

I think LastRites should check his disconnect.

Really?  I'll have to try it next time.  I've had poor luck with Oxpho-Blue, but have yet to try the heat trick.

+1 on that.

Have about a dozen cold blue solutions and each work different.  Each has a different color and some work on SS depending on it's make up.
