What range?
What terminal ballistics are you after?
Is an adjustable stock important to you?
Is weight a consideration?

Skip the bull barrel. WOA has a 26" to give you all the velocity you can squeeze out. I would also thread it an use a comp (not a flash hider) like a JP, F2, Coolie, etc. Of course a good aluminum free float handguard should be used.
http://www.whiteoakarmament.com/barrels.htm
JP has good barrels for the same money.
Stocks, grips, etc don't kill so use whatever your heart desires.

i don't care about weight.  it would be nice to hit as far out as 500-600 yards with a good knock down.  i like the magpul prs for the stock.  i main concern would be barrel, trigger, and sights.

I'm building about the same thing, here is what i'm using so far...

Vultor MUR-1A upper
Tactical innovations BDX lower
Young National Match BCG
24" Sabre Defense 410 Stainless Fluted Barrel
Magpul PRS Gen II
Leupold VX-III 6.5-20x50mm LR, TT, 30mm tube scope

If you dont care about weight go with a bull barrel because its nice
to see your target in the scope and watch it fall as you pull the trigger.
DPMS lower
DPMS hi rider Upper
Shilen hand lapped stainless match grade barrel 24inch bull
JP stailess bolt carrier
JP Vtac handguard
Magpul PRStock
Jewell trigger
Bushnell Elite 4200 4-16 power

If it will be used only for varmint use I would suggest chambering it in .204.

ditto on the .204,
I have a 24" Model1 upper in .204 on a DPMS lower.
Talk about no recoil...
I love the .204.....

A 204 aint going to be much of knock down at 5-6 hundred yrds.

I'd be looking at something more in the 6mm or 6.5 mm. The 260 Rem. or the 243 Win.

just buy the Les Baer super varmint 24, his guns shoot in the 1's and 2's and come with test targets for proof. they are all shot by Les himself off a sand bag front rest using a leup 36 dot, on an outdoor range. he  uses winchester supreme 223 factory ammo. and for the build, take it apart and put it back together...you can brag how you built it to your friends.

about the only thing i dont like about the rifle is the cheap plastic grip, toss it and get a hogue for twenty bucks.

i have a david lauck precision ar, i got it on the cheap but its a big dollar rig ( you can check out the gun on his site) the les baer super varmint puts the DL Sports AR to shame.

I know wtf I said.  I wanted to know the life of his barrel.  There are only a few that have done extensive shooting with this round and have kept half-assed data... AND MADE IT PUBLIC.

AND that fucking data makes the round almost majical for barrel life. {Classic SS, not C-L'd}

Over 10k rounds for 0.100" of throat erosion.  That's farkin majical.  Hell, the .223 can't even get to 80% of 5K rounds with that amount of erosion and the .260 Rem is even worse.  The 6mm BR has a great record and no one has been even close... till now it seems.

When it first came out I said THROAT BURNER!!!  But for the few that have been keeping track of round count and accuracy... I just may have to recant and even get my own 204.

How'd I do?

Superior lower
DPMS High Rider Upper
DPMS 24in Bull barrel
YHM Free Float handguard
ACE stock
Bushnell scope
Jewell Trigger
DPMS TiN coated bolt assy

The flash and the garage lights make the colors look a bit 'funny' in the second picture, but all the parts match (in color and fit).

snowmonkey, it would help to know what your intended targets are. I've made annual treks to the prairie dog towns of South Dakota for the last 5 years, and usually take a new rifle or two. First year I used various bolt guns and one AR in .223. Everyone on that trip used a .223 AR. The longest confimed kill was at 585 yards. That was with a .223 Ackley AR15 that I built, using .223 ammo being fireformed. That distance is REALLY strecthing the .223. It's normally fairly windy out there.
Someone mentioned using something in the 6mm or 6.5 family. This year I hope to take an AR in 6mmAR chambering. The heavier weight of 6mm bullets should make long range hits more numerous. Most of the 6mm or 6.5 rounds require an AR10 or SR25 lower, due to the .473 head diameter on the case. The 6mmAR and 6.5 Grendel can be built on an AR15 platform, cheaper to do for sure.

coyotes and bowling pins are my main targets.  it will need to be in the 5.56 cal.  i've got the dpms parts kit and lower.  i've also got the magpul prs.

We can't really tell you what stock, grip and forend are the most comfortable for you. For me it's the A2 stock and hogue grip. Is that the most expensive, fanciest, strongest, etc? No, but it feels good when I'm shooting.

Check out White Oak uppers. If you want to shoot extended distances heavier bullets and velocity are your goals. Have a 24-26" upper made and scope it with the best glass you can find.

FWIW, at 300 yards my 60gr vmax load launched at 3,100 fps is no longer "explosive" on diggers. Dead yes, exlosive not so much. At 500-600 yards every fps will count to ensure certain kills on yotes.

6.5 or 6.8 will fit in a .223 lower so nothing has to change, only diff is barrel, bolt, and mag. They also hit notably harder at those ranges and except the ammo price is the same.I'd go PRS stock, top tier 24" fluted barrel in stainless( WOA,Krieger,Shilen, Noveske).Upper/ lower any of the quality ones, Gieselle trigger, Larue handguard, Ergo palm rest grip,Nightforce 5.5-20 or Loopy 6.5-20 scope.
Oh and pics are in order when it's completed....

Another varmint shooter here who prefers the larger calibers.  The tiny .204 is not the best for long range shooting in windy conditions usually found while prairie dog shooting.  My preference for the longer ranges you are describing is the 6x45 (.223 necked up to 6mm).  One advantage to something like the 6mm (.243) is that heavier bullets still fit in a standard AR15 magazine (unlike with the .223) so you do not have to single load.  This can be quite welcome, especially in a large prairie dog town.

I had a dpms stainless 24" bull upper in .223 and was getting 10" groups at 1000yds with a 6.5-20 VXIII.  I ended up replacing the barrel with a 20" Colt hbar because i got tired of the weight though.

What's the preferred twist rate for a varmint rig?  I would think you'd mostly be shooting light bullets, in the 40-55 range.  This would indicate a 1-9 or maybe even a 1-12 twist?  Seems like 1-9 would be ideal as it's more versatile than 1-12.

Another option in the 6mm round would be the .243 WSSM.  This will fit into the standard AR-15 platform and equal or exceed the .243 Win ballistics.  If you reload, you can load it down and still blow the .223/5.56 round out of the water (ballistics wise).  I am hoping to get one of these soon from DTech and designate this as my long range round.

How far do you want to shoot your "varmint rig?" The issue with long range shooting are all of the external factors. Shooting "in a vacum" a light bullet would be just fine out to @ 5-600 yards. It would just be a matter of knowing your ballistics. Real world adds wind, elevation, air density and "tough" targets. Heavier bullets usually have better ballistic coefficeints and SD's. They will perform better at longer ranges than the light bullets.

So the answer to your question: I prefer a 1-8 twist to shoot varmint bullets in the 60-70 gr range. My favorite is the 60gr vmaxs that perform very well in the 1-8. If I were building a 600 yard gun I would go with 1-7 for bullets up to 80gr.

forget .223 for anything past 400 yards. yes it can be done. but is it good at it. NO. I say go with a 6mmAR chambering. it will get you out there with power to spare. 6.5 would probably be good to. I hope you reload though. anything other than .223 gets super pricey.
