I'm certainly no expert, but I think Randall at AR15barrels.com is. Check out the "On .223 Remington" part near the bottom of his website here:
www.ar15barrels.com/faq.shtml Apparently, a .223 chamber CAN be reamed to a 5.56 chamber. He seems to not recommend it, though. |

I would recommend going to a 223 wylde.
As long as the barrel is not chrome lined, this can be done. This will safely run any 5.56 ammo while being more accurate than a 5.56 nato chamber. I really need to update my site... |

How much accuracy is degraded by using a 5.56 chamber vs a 223 chamber? More or less than 1/10 moa?

There's a LOT more to it than that... Most 5.56 barrels are also chrome lined. That will be a big contributor to the loss in accuracy. If I had to nail down a number on the chamber difference alone, I would say maybe 1/4MOA to 3/8 MOA difference. The presence or lack of chrome can hurt you from 1/4 MOA to 1MOA+ depending on how bad the chrome job is and the barrel preperation underneath the chrome. A good quality match grade 223 Wylde barrel should be able to shoot 1/2 MOA or better when you find the load it likes. An average quality 5.56 chrome lined barrel should be able to shoot 1.5 MOA. Of course there are always exceptions, but these are general guidelines. |

The reason I am asking is because I do alot of compitiion shooting and use alot of reloads. I have heard alot of stories of 223 chambers sticking with reloads. Currently I use a SS m4 contour barrel and love it. I just want to step up to a bull barrel for bench rest, and longer ranges with a bipod.

That's an ammo problem, not a chamber problem. If you watch what you are doing, you will not create ammo that's oversized at the web or in shoulder length. I take it that you have still not looked at my chamber reamer comparison have you? If you had, you could see how good of a design the 223 wylde reamer really is... |

It has been one of those days today. Is there in any loss in accuracy between the wylde chamber and the 223? I looked at your diagram. Just looking at the dimensions tells me nothing. Could you explain them please. Can 223 be converted to the Wylde chamber? |

If you -really- want accuracy then you should probably work out the load you plan to use and provide a sample round to the smith who'll custom cut the chamber to match that load. If you're going to use an "off the shelf" chamber then I doubt you'll be able to tell the difference. I certainly can't. |

The accuracy comes mainly from two things about the chamber. #1 How well the throat is centered in the bore #2 How well the bullets fit the throat. Every dimension behind the throat is just to make clearance for the case. Not much accuracy differences in the way the case fits the chamber as long as the case puts the bullet where it needs to be in the throat. As for 223 (saami) vs 223 Wylde, the 223 Wylde is bigger in most case dimensions than 5.56 nato. There's LOTS of room for the case to move around. The thing that makes the Wylde one of the best chamberings is the loose body combined with the tight throat. This gives you both the reliability (loose body dimensions) and accuracy (tight throat dimensions). A 223 Wylde reamer will clean out a 223 Saami chamber. |
