Hi guys.

I plan on adding a YHM free float and I know I will need to remove the barrel nut and delta ring.

Do I need an action block or could I just use a shaped peice of hardwood slid up into the magwell and tightened in a vice.

You don't need an action block, but don't do what your talking about. You have to seperate the upper from the lower before removing the barrel, atleast I would highly recomend doing that. Then you can put the upper in a barrel vice or an action block. If you don't have either I would borrow them or take it to a pro to remove your barrel. If you insist on doing it yourself, you might get away with it but then again you might mess something up.
