Whats the cheapest AR you've ever put together? Id be lying if I said I wasnt looking for tips on a really cheap gun. I just want something thats more accurate than my SKS, but just cannot pony up $800 - $1600 for a complete rifle. Anybody go below $500? $400??

Right around the $500 mark.  Buying stripped lowers from dpms and everything else  from the equipment exchange.

complete A1 upper with stock, handguards and pistol grip. $350
Century stripped CMT lower $105
Stag LPK $45
80% colt A1 clone $500

complete A1 upper with stock, handguards and pistol grip. $350
CavArms lower $90
Sarco LPK $35
fun 20in rifle $475

the A1 uppers were from buffer technologies. they had some they got in trade from the MO state police.

some of the members that sucked up the Colt A2 kits from Tapco about 4yrs ago should have some good stories. those kits were $249. add a stripped lower and those guys were building Colt A2s for around $350

Around $425:

$350 for the CAR kit at the Gun Show
$ 69 for the stripped DPMS lower from an independent local FFL

Timeline of 1992-1994, built 'em while watching TV on layoff and sold for $550- $600. The Colts were about $699 & up back then.

I still have two complete DPMS builds and I consider them freebies.

Nowadys I buy the complete lower for $280- $300 and the complete upper for $350 - $450 for a total of $630 -$750. Usually Bushmaster or RRA.

Is that a 20" barrel with a collapsable stock?  I am looking to do this.  Is that a 6 pos or 4 pos stock?  I'm a newbie, but was wanting to build something like yours.  Can you tell us more about it?????

Here's the parts list:
Superior Arms stripped lower-$80
RRA LPK-$50
RRA 6 position stock-$70
DPMS Bolt/carrier-$100 (all of these parts were bought from Robert from RB Precision locally)
M16A2 upper assembly off gunbroker-$308 shipped.

For some reason, I really like the feel of it. Since it's a gov't profile barrel under the handguards, it is still very light and swings very well. It's also been dead-nuts reliable with it's 100% Wolf diet.

I built one for $377 it is a 20" SP1 Colt upper and Superior Arms blem lower I got it all but the lower from the EE boards.
I am currently working on an M4 for a freind that is almost  done and he has around $224 in it and all he needs now is a bolt/carrier/charing handle then its done.
I also got a start on a another one for myself that i have a striped lower for and a Colt A2 upper with an 20" Gov. profile  that i have $225 in so far also.
I also have an M4 that i have $520 in it that just not all together yet.
So it can be done if you look around.

Here is my $377 SP1

All this talk of cheap AR builds makes me happy, because:

A.) I want to put together an AR (been doing some research on and off this site for awhile now)
B.) I'm a poor college student with little/no money (school + bills makes me he
I just need to save a little bit, buy myself a stripped lower and then let the fun begin. I'm counting down the days until my birthday.

Oh, first post. Hey guys
