Looking to put something interesting and unusual on top of an AR-10 lower I'm finishing up.  I've seen some of the short ultra mags, which seem worth a look, but what's available in a big bore?

Check out this thread.  Two good options for your AR10 build.

Those are AR-15 chamberings.
I don't think either will stack well in an AR-10 mag.

Yup you are correct.  I need more coffee

Follow the above link and look 2/3 way down, .450 Marlin in a AR10? Rifle or carbine?

Depends on if you want something big or little.

The 6mmXC is very hot in high power rifle competition.  These things shoot amazingly small groups at 600-1000 yards.

.358 Winchester is a favorite medium bore cartridge based on the .308 Winchester case.

Well maybe I'll be your guinea pig on the marlin chambering.  The idea of a commercially available round is more appealing to me than a custom deal.

would and ar10 be able to handle a 300 weatherby mag, or 30-338 mag

The cartridges have to be very close to  .308 length.  The mag well would not accomodate those longer cartridges.
