Least I ever spent was $800 on a preban in the ban years.

A buddy made an M4 clone with a SS barrel and a ARMS 40, and a FIRSH, for $300.

I don't have a picture right now, but I built one for $547 and that included all the shipping.

Bought the stripped LAR lower at a gunshow, stripped A2 upper on ebay, back when you could, upper parts kit from the EE, 16" M4 barrel kit from Delton, chrome bolt from local gun shop, used carrier from a friend, firing pin and cam pin from RRA, lower parts kit and 6 position stock from JSE Surplus.  Oh, got the barrel wrench at gun show and action block from Fulton.

And it's now my favorite.

the lower i bought stripped at a little less than going price
the upper i got from a friend that needed some money
the grip and stock i had laying in the spare parts box

I helped someone out with some weapon related issues, and ended up with it.

Looks like the cheapest I am going to put this one together is for $767...

With 16" varmint barrel and 6 position CAR stock.  I tried the 2 stage trigger, and I am not sure that I like it...  but this one should be killer...

Realistically, it is possible to build an AR for $400  or so, if you can snap up the deals which occasionally come across rhe EE (e.g., I've lately seen uppers receivers for $50-60, stocks for $20-30, barrels for less than $100, etc., etc.,). Forget the $185 BS! This is the kind of accounting that killed Enron!! Sheep lie!!

Just under $400

There's a complete A2 upper for sale right now on the EE for $300. That would be a good start!
