I want to reproduce my ar15 carrier and fcg at the shop, and maybe the bolt if I can get the right tools to cut out the lugs.  I figure they just used 4140 or something like that, but I wanted to double check what type of steel is used.  Not a huge deal, i would like to be able to actually use them if possible, but its more just for a fun project.  Nevertheless, any help would be appreciated.  I should probably also ask, it is legal to produce these parts right?  As long is it is to semi auto specs and all that right?

Yes, as long as its semiauto, you are good to go.  Why not start with making a decent trigger first?


There was a list awhile back about the same thing you are asking, and the info was gained.  Sadly, I never saved any of it, but I'm sure someone will be along before long to refresh us all.

Somewhere I read about bolts and maybe extensions being made of Carpenter 8620, but that's off the top of my head and therefore NOT to be trusted.
There's a lot more than just choosing the right steel, there's different kinds of heat treatment on different parts depending on the engineering needs.
Proper bolt carriers are chrome lined as well, not just machined.

Tweak knows this stuff in his sleep if you can get his attention...
