That's strange. If your detent moves freely when you press it down then there should not be a problem. Does your upper have a small notch where the detent should slip thru?

Try putting a little penetrating lube on the detent and push it down a few times. It may just be a stiff spring or a rough  edge on the notch of the upper.

Problem solved.  Had to work from the end to the detent applying even pressure.  Did this repeatedly until things smoothed up.  Thanks for the help.
