im new to ar's and i have an assembled rra lower and 6 pos stock.  im looking for some oppinions on what upper/barrel i should get.  price is an issue but i wont buy a pos.  i want this done right the first time.  i want an a3 upper and a 16" barrel 1:9 and chromed.  i want all the evil stuff too.

id like something new but used with a low round count will also work

id like the upper and barrel to come assembled as i dont want to bother with headspacing

im a broke college student so i want to be as informed as possible before i spend money that i dont have.

this is my first post btw, i love the site, tons of info!

thanks for the help in advance

just buy it one piece at a time.  head space is not an issue because it is done with the barrel extention at the factory.

as far as parts go, any of the "big" names will be quality.  you just need to look around and decide what you want.

Hehehe, one more college student joins the ranks

2nd year, here.

Save pennies, don't eat breakfast........or lunch....don't buy more than you need to, and you'll have that upper in no time.

You could look at the Stag M4 uppers. IIRC, they run a little under $500 complete with a rear site.

You can still get rifles and parts while at school, you just have to cut down on what you don't have to buy. This is my most recent one. I'm up to 4 right now, but I'm taking a break from building for awhile. I gotta save money too

Where exactly do you college boys hide your guns?

In MY day (4 years ago) College wouldn't even let me have a sword in my campus dorm.

I also just bought a RRA complete lower with 6 position stock, and I am in college too.  We should keep in touch and see how both of are rifles turn out.  (I'm getting a degree in Law Enforcement Justice Administration from Western Illinois University, I'm in my last class currently).  I think im going to go with a 16'' A2 or A3 upper with a mid length foregrip in a quadrail.  I want to have iron sights first, and see if i want to put optics on later.  I want to be able to accesorize easily in the future so I am going to spot for the quadrail off the bat.  I want to put a light on it for sure.  I also want the mid length foregrip to get a longer sight radius, and also a bayo will fit nicely for shits and grins.  Im looking at the RRA uppers now.  lucky me, I work with an FFL class 2 dealer, and he gets me anything I want for 5% over cost, even then things are pricey.

I live at home and go to college locally. All my AR's are in my room. I'm gonna transfer down state to Illinois State next year, though. I think that will suck. Hopefully, I'll get a job with an understanding farmer with a gunsafe. I don't know if I'll be able to spring for my own apartment.

BTW, TheLibertarianMind the bayo will fit.

I go to college at Sauk Valley CC. If you come to the IL hometown forum, Kalahnikid, Marksman14, Deej86, and GTO.......... something,  are all college kids in IL. Course, if you're in your last class, you're gonna be a little older than the rest of us.

Even back when I was in college (back in the mid to late 80s) I always lived off-campus, so no worries with fascist dorm rules.  Not to mention that while the rules got more and more repressive, the prices went up and up.  The university I went to has completely closed about 1/2 the dorm buildings (torn several of them down) since I was in school and hasn't built any new ones since the late 60s or early 70s, and the town has sprouted dozens and dozens of apartment complexes over the years so it seems like the trend is for most people to shun the dorms in favor of off campus housing these days.

I live in an appartment with my girlfriend.  I live in the St. louis area right now. I am taking my last class at SIU Edwardsville.  I work surveilance for a casino right now.  When I lived in the dorms I did not have my weapons with me.  (I left them at mom's. LOL)  Now I have my arsenal with me.  I live in a shitty area not to far from East St. Louis.  About every week the grocery store not 400 yrds away from me gets knocked over.  My landlord bolted down are A/C window units to the frames and siding because scumbags try two steal them, and I'm on the second floor.  I got to get this AR built soon.  I have an AK right know, but you know, you can never have enough.

Thanks WIZZO for that bayo pic.  That seals the deal for me I going to try to get that RRA upper with mid length foregrip in quadrail.  The girlfriend will have to wait for her new car and engagment ring.  I want a new rifle now damnit!

i had to leave all my guns at home but im having all my parts sent here and im keeping it all at a friends apartment.  i hate the dorm rules but hopefully by this time next year ill be in an apartment.

i have another question though, what do i need to do in order to attatch a bayonet?  i plan on getting a 16" m4 barrel with the bayo lug but ive read that the bayonet doesnt really attatch to all barrel lengths? whats the truth behind all of this?

CHECK HERE for a pic of how a bayo will look on a 16" M4 profile barrel. It will rattle around a little, but it will do its job.

is the stock RRA bolt carrier ok, or is it worth getting a chrome one?

A few points of interest.

You don't have to worry about headspacing anything on an AR that is new or slightly used.  That's done at the factory.  Building an upper from a barrel and upper receiver does not affect headspace in any way.  Just build it.

Chrome carriers aren't worth the extra money.

That's it for now.

OK.  Chrome barrel or not?  The judging factor that I have for this question is: In a SHTF situation (IE: natural disaster and lawlessness) and you had the choice of one of two rifles, (to protect yourself and family,) both rifles are the same exept one has a chromed barrel and one that does not, witch one do you choose?

Chrome-lined.

Won't have to worry about the bore rusting and it will last twice as long as a chrome-moly in the same conditions.

I was just trying to tell my g/f the exact same thing haha so when I showed her the post she was not impressed

I measure the monetary worth of things in AK-47s.  So one AK is the equivilent of $300.  I measure up alot of things like that around my friends and G/F.  I keep tell my G/F that her ring is going to be worth 10 AK-47s that I wont have because I love her that much.  Actually she understands me quite well and knows how much that means from me.  So I allow one gun purchase for me for every year until I get her a car and a ring.  Not a bad deal if you ask me.  It's all in are budget, and we share the same bank account.  I just let her know my needs, and she lets me know hers.  (don't tell her this, but: I'm not going to get married untill I'm well armed).
