can I change the carrier and\or bolt on my AR without needing to have the headspace checked? I know nothing about the headspace issue.  Also if I buy an upper assembly without the bolt\carrier do I need to have it checked?

yes, no

You can change carriers all day without affecting headspace.  If your barrel or bolt has been used quite a bit it is generally wise to check headspace or just buy a new bolt.  Your best bet is to just a USGI field guage for $25 and if a the bolt closes on it then your headspace is messed up.  Headspace is determined by the barrel extension so a new upper should not have a problem.

yes on the carrier

i wouldnt on the bolt

usually not a problem with low round count but the bolts usually wear together with the barrel ext. which would give you hs problems when swapping
