YEah, conventional righty-tighty lefty-loosie on flash hiders.
A way around not having an upper vice block is to put a 1" dowel in the upper to prevent crushing, wrap your upper in an old T-shirt or cardboard and put it in a vice. Of course, dont' put so much torque on the barrel nut as to damage your carry handle or rail notches. |

I was looking at the DPMS Flipper vise block.

I would say no it's not.... Do yourself a favor and get a upper block. I would recomend the Brownell's Action Block...Part # 702-003-015, page 27 of the catalog, $43.75 Well made, sturdy. I just used mine for building my SPRish rifle... |

Get the right block, you will kick yourself if you mess something up because you wanted to save a few bucks, or because you are in a hurry.

You don't need a block or vise. The first dozen or so uppers I put together was done by having someone stand on the uppper.

I have both DPMS action blocks. The flipper IMO if very flimsy. Good for light work but not for heavy. For doing barrel work I much prefer to use the two-pin DPMS action block. The clam shell type upper action blocks are OK unless you are working with a Lo-Pro type upper which will not fit them, and of course, that is what I am working with half the time. block |

I tried it *once*...the new upper I had to buy was $90 shipped.
 that area on the right side there below the ejection port is VERY easy to bend. I would really recommend you don't do it. An action block is $35, a new receiver is pushing $100 these days...do the math. The white delrin DPMS block is the shizzle...I had the clamshell, but sold it as soon as I got the DPMS one. |

no...get the white one with the two pins, it works on ANY upper.

It great and works with all kinda of uppers...seems to be very well made too. |

Yes..that is the one I suggested...works with any upper reciever.... Got one sitting on the bench... I can also give a +1 to the Yankee Hill wrench, it's about as bulletproof as you can get with a freefloat wrench... |

This is the DPMS two pin upper receiver block I just ordered from Brownells: http://www.brownells.com/Images/Products/231000157.jpg I didn't go with the Brownells/Peace River clamshell design 'cause I figured it prevents you from doing front-to-rear sight alignment and also 'cant do barreling on Hi-ride uppers. |

You should have seen my wife and I trying to put a KAC RAS on my Bushmaster M4gery. A handguard removal tool was express ordered soon after. |

What type of upper is it? If it's a flat top use two pieces of wood one on top and one on the bottom and clamp it sideways in a vise. If its a A1 or 2 then get the block.

I plan on my Upper Receiver Block and Armorers Wrench from Brownells. I heard that the DMPS multi-tool is that not that great, but how is the Smith Enterprises Armorers wrench. Is Good to Go?? and what is the poll on DMPS #231-000-157 upper receiver block better than the Brownells #702-003-015 /NSN:4933-01-491-6732

The clamshell type won't work on a non standard upper, ie, DPMS lo profile, etc. If you won't ever get one of those, the clamshell type will work...but why limit yourself, when the DPMS block works great on ANYTHING? I've had both, and I sold my clamshell type right after I used the DPMS the first time...never looked back. |
