For 95%+ of civilian situations, they are "nice but not absolutely neccessary".
If you run into an intermitting feeding issue with a wore out mag or whatever, the paper target will not shoot back. So for civvie use, I can take it or leave it. I did however recently speak we a deploying Marine getting ready for his second visit to the sandbox, who stated his CO allowed personal M4 uppers to replace the M16 uppers, but these uppers MUST have 1/7, chrome bore, and M4 feedramps. Before they could bring it along the armorer had to sign off on it having these features. They were running 62, 68, and 77gr |

ive shot 55gr, 62gr, 65gr, 75gr, subsonics & tracers and never had an issue.

Yes I have. I have a custom made 14.5" non chrome lined barrel with a rifle barrel extension mounted in a M4 ramped LMT receiver. This creates a lip of metal that the rounds coming out of the mag would sometimes catch on. So I WECSOG'd it and it's fine now and 100% reliable.

Yep.
But only because the drunken Monkies that assembled my M&A Parts M4 upper put an upper that was correctly cut for the ramps on a barrel with a RIFLE barrel extension. Funny thing was, it worked for 1800rds and then started jamming like crazy. 15 minutes with a dremel after I got home from shooting, and I had an upper with "M4" feed ramps AND a barrel extension that had some newly acquired M4 feed ramps. Other than that, the 3 other AR's I've been in contact with haven't needed them. WIZZO ETA: This guy held the upper while I was dremeling

I dremmeled the barrel feed ramps to match my LMT's ramps.

I have them on my M-4 but all I shoot is 55 and 62 gr FMJ Wolf Polymer through it. And like someone said, paper targets don't shoot back so I've never really been in a situation where I would need it to be 100% reliable. I just figured shoot, military has them on the M-4's for some reason so I should have them as well.

I don't get exactly what you mean, as now you can buy government profile barrels and a few others with the M4 ramps. They certainly aren't commonplace among most AR barrels, but definitely available. Colt, LMT, and Armalite all offer them, not to mention a couple upper makers offering true M4 uppers as well. Gundraw |

+1 on the round nose bullets!
I also played around with borderline mags that wouldn't work 100% with my upper with no extended feed ramps and those same mags worked 100% with my upper that had extended feed ramps. IMHO, the feed ramps help lower the the tolerance for bullet type and magazine condition and those are all good things in my book. It's basically like extra reliability insurance and well worth the small increase in the price of the barrel. Actually if you shop around it seems like you can get barrels with exended feed ramps for about the price as those without.
