Are you wanting info  on the original XM177, or the more common XM177E2?

The 177 had a 10 inch barrel and a flash suppressor that you can essentially duplicate with the Bushmaster part number 1005-914-3902. It's 4.5 inches long, andwill give you a total overall length of 14 inches when mounted.

The E2 had a barrel length of 11.5 inches, and the suppressor has a different profile at the rear.  The rebate is thicker and slightly longer, and has flats milled in each side for installation/removal with the standard wrench. Also, the E2 uses a special rear washer which is the same diameter as the main body of the suppressor, and gives the whole assembly a funky appearance.  Overall length w/the suppressor mounted is 15.5 inches.

Barrel profile on both types is the standard M16/M16A1, except, of course that the barrel in front of the sight base is a lot shorter. One of the Bushmaster "Superlight" 16 inchers, cut to the right length, would be a good replica; and give you a 1in9 twist.  My own 177E2 clone was built on a Colt SP1 carbine, so I'm stuck w/the 1in12 twist of the originals.

I don't have picture capability, but if you'll look on the Parts section of the EE forum of this site, I think that XM177 E2 kits are currently being sold over there and the listing has pics.

well as close as I can get i.e over 16" :)
I'm thinking of getting a bushy lightweight and cut it to like 11.5 then weld the 5.5 Fh. should be pretty close right ?

That "funky" washer at the rear is slightly larger than the OD of the FH so that it will friction fit a Rifle Grenade or Greande Adapter.

But here is my XM177 clone:



It's a Colt  early Sporter Match HBAR wearing an SP1 upper and a Bushmaster 16" Superlight weight barrel and Bushie's slipover/reverse flash suppressor. The muzzle is right at the back end of the flash suppressor slots.

By comparing this pic with the real thing you can tell the barrel is still a couple or so inches too long, but it looks rather close. And it is light and handy as a carbine should be.
