Ok, I am thinking about getting some headspace gauges.

I think I definitely would get the No-go gauge, maybe the field.

But from what I understand, can't you just see if a cartrigde will load instead of using a go gauge? or is this a problem because of differing sizes of cartridges?

A cartridge will be able to load into a worn out barrel with too much headspace. Thus the reason for no-go and field gauges. Casing lengths can vary within certain tolerances. The Go gauge is at the bottom end of this tolerance range.

I would like to know where I can purchase 5.56 NATO headspace gauges. I'd rather get the 5.56 gauges rather than .233 gauges, since I have a 5.56 chamber.

Dimensionaly .223 and 5.56 are the same, pressures are different. That's probably why you can't find 5.56 guages.

I never could get a straight answer here so I would buy all 3 guages. Or just buy a complete upper.

Read this: 5.56 vs. .223. There is some info floating around out there explaining how the .223 headspace gauges don't accurately gauge a 5.56 chamber. There is a difference and if I find the info, I'll come back and post it. I use the military issue headspace gauge to check my 5.56 chambers.

Check Brownells. I have a set of Clymer 5.56 Nato gauges. Go, No-Go and Field. They're 30 bucks a pop though.

Clymer guages

Part numbers are:

Go #184-100-007
No-go #184-100-008
Field #184-100-009

I think about the cheapest I've seen are about $21 each, anyone know of a cheaper place?

It's been awhile and I don't have time to look it up right now. I believe a Forester .223 No-Go gauge will work for a 5.56 Go. I think it a 1 or 2 thou loose, but safe.

Thank you. I looked through the Brownell's catalog and didn't see these. I'll order some soon, just to be safe and to complete my AR15 tool kit.
