It has no front site. The front of the barrel is threaded. The first 8 inches are thick(the front). The other 12 1/2 inches are thinner (tapered) and then get thick again. What should I do to build it into an upper?

The markings are as follows: C MP 5.56 NATO 1/7

That's a colt 20" govt. profile barrel, probably came off an M16. Best 20" profile IMO.

You'll have to buy a front sight or gas block and attach it to an upper with a barrel nut.

Get you a gas block and go.  Excellent start on a rifle length free float, and flip up front sight..... or whatever you want out of it.
