Its not so much the vice but what the vice is attatched to. Pick a good, solid and heavy table and a good vice. Id say one with a 4" long by 1" tall jaws would be good. MSC and J&L should have some good ones.

My dad and I have used the 4" vise we got at Sears with success.

I'd say a 4" vice is about the minimum size I'd use.

4" is the bare minimum, but 5" much better. Check Lowe's and Home Depot. I picked up a very nice 5" for $50 at Lowe's. It swivels and the head rotates.

The biggest sturdiest mofo you can get.
If you have to disassemble it to be able to carry it without injuring your back, it's probably the right size. Mine isn't even attached to the workbench. I bolted it to a 5ft slab of wood that way I can use my body weight and work with it on the ground. |
