The manual tells me not to take it off. If I want to switch it out, is there anything special I should do?

Just watch for the little spring coming out at you when you pull the grip off. It's on the left side, directly below the selector. Other than that, it's straight forward.

don't know why your manual would say that, just remove the screw and pull it off carefully as to not lose the small spring and detent held in by it.

Yank it off.  Throw that manual you have away.
