Ok, I've heard a lot about A2's and A3's. Uppers and stocks and sights.

Please inform me as to difference between an A2 and an A3.

Thanks

A-2   Upper reciever and carry handle 1 piece forging, sight assy. is adjustable for windage and elevation.

A-3 is flattop upper receiver, less handle, More suitable for mounting optics, accys. etc.

Here is a Colt A-3 (top) verses a A-1 (bottom) you get the picture.

So, I could add a removable carry handle to an A3 Flattop configuration, but the A2 is a solid forged piece?

correct, the A2 and A1 are solid units.

flat tops can be labled A3 or M4 (although the M4 upper is different in a few minor ways)

then there are a few different flat top uppers, like raised top, no forward assist, side cocking....

Can you expand on the differences between an A3 and M4 upper?

A "real" M4 upper will have the chamber guide ramps extended out of the barrel locking lugs down into the upper receiver.   (there should be a photo floating around arfcom somewhere)

My issue M4A1 has "M4" stamped right above where the gas tube enters the receiver

also, some M4's may have the top mounting positions tapped and/or marked (T1, T2, T3...etc)
