Could someone give me some advice on removing the gas block on a flat top upper?  I am getting a Rock River Varmit upper, I want to remove the handguards prior to painting it, then of course replace them. It's a floated barrel with an aluminum handguard. As a side note, anyone have experience with these uppers? Accuracy?
Thanks for any help
Mike

To remove the gas block, check the guns to ensure its empty, remove the boltcarrier, make a mark on the gasblock and barrel to aid realignment when putting it back together, drive the two taper pins holding it from left to right (i believe that is the right direction, hit the little side of the pin).  Assuming there is no muzzle device then you should be able to slide the block with the gas tube attached free.  When reinstalling you're supposed to use new taper pins and a taper pin punch.  If you're using a block with setscrews then of course disregard the business about the taper pins.  If you have a muzzle device permanently attached you may not be able to remove the gasblock from the barrel.
