If by long distance ya mean 500-1000 yards, then the 24" barrel is what ya want. Should your idea of long range be 200-600 yards the 20" barrel will probably fit the bill, with the proper loads. (this is assuming your speaking of ARs)

I my long range (1000 yards) bolt rifles of differing calibers, I prefer even longer barrels, for example my 30-06 has a 27.5" barrel on it.

In .223 you won't gain more than 100 fps by going to a 24", the barrel just adds weight.
