Should they be placed - to +?
Or, shoud I put something between them to keep the contacts apart?

I wraped a small strip of 100mph tape around the batteries to keep them insulated.

I'd like to know the answer to this too. It it safe to just stack them in the grip or other storage device, + to - ? I should there be a nonconducter between each cell?

Batteries hooked up in series (+ to -) act like one larger battery. So having two stacked on top of each other is just the same as having one in there. As long as the top or bottom of the storage area is non-conductive, then there is no completed circuit to run the batteries down.

Ive had no trouble with my VLTOR just drop them in and left it alone?

I wonder if there is really truth in the above statements

Storing them stacked in series is relatively harmless and won't cause any drain if there's nothing to complete the circuit.
