Need some ideas on how to mount a surefire to an M4 with no rails. Can't cost a lot and must be able to last for atleast a year in the sand box.

Can't tell you how well they work, but they look pretty heavy-duty to me, and you can see these mounts holding Surefire G2's on 82d Abn Div M4's overseas

Sorry, but I didn't notice that you said "NO rails".

For a rail, try any of the many picatinny rails that bolt onto handguards, along with the WFM mount.

If using the stock handguards and a bolt throuh platform, for hard use, be careful that's kind of fragile. Year's a long time, and under hard use, that may be a problem.  Sure Fire has a barrel/under front sight mt.  All steel and sturdy or GG&G has a front sight
tower mount, never used it but also all steel.

GG&G makes a sling thing that mounts in the front sight tower....on the left side there is a loop to mount the sling, on the right side there is a piece of weaver rail to mount a light...I have one that I was going to up on the for sale board....If you are interested in it, you can contact me at [email protected]

That mount looks nice and strong but damn! It looks like a brick would be more low profile.Anyone have actual pics of this thing on their RAS?

Bushmaster sells a 'clamp on' unit that attaches to the standard handguards (I don't think it works with the fatter M4 handguards).  This unit allows you to mount the light at 3:00 or 9:00 and can be quickly and easily removed.

Another options is the GG&G front sight mount.  It attaches a section of rail to your front sight tower.  Not quick to remove - but very durable.

Or you can just buy a set of Fobus handguards - sell 1 and keep the other.  Mount the light to the rail and replace the lower handguard.  When you turn in your rifle put the standard handguard back.

Budget, trying to keep it 50-75.00. Can't modify the weapon (ie.cant replace the hand guards etc.)Uncle Sam / Commander not happy if I take a drill to the hand guards.

The handguards from first samco with the integrated weaver rails may work.
I think it is the m33 handguards for the carbine version consists of a top and bottom handguard with a rail and cover for each. (You would then have 2 halfs to use, split the costs with a buddy or have a spare.)

I wanted something that I could quickly remove from my personally owned rifle to install on an issue rifle.

Well, with that budget your and the limitations you mentioned (no modification of handguard) you are basically limited to a Surefire G2 and front sight tower type mount or a Surefire G2 in a duct tape/wire tie rig around the handguard.

You'll have to replace a duct tape/wire tie type rig occasionally but the mounting materials are cheap.

I'd buy your own handguard (Fobus Railed Handguard would be affordable on that budget if you can get someone to go halves with it on you since you both only need one part of it) and mount the flashlight to it. Switch with your duty weapon when you need a light, switch back to the issue when you turn it in.

Duck tape a Maglite to the bottom of your handguards.  It might be heavy - but you could use a 2 C cell light and it wouldn't be too bad.

Best of all, no damage.

Dont get any mount that is offset to the left side if at at possible. It's easy to snag web gear or doesn't allow you to rest your weapon comfortably in certain conditions. Also think about batteries. You didn't say which Surefire you had. Here in Iraq, depending on your location, you will only find the standard size batteries and alot of times those are out of stock. Units class 9 is always on back order when you need it or not available period.

Shit. Its almost impossible to get SAPI plates let alone the right batteries for your gear. Depend on a loved one back home for your personal needs.

If your like a 95Bravo, get something tough as nails that you can drop all day long without damage.

If your 71Lima buy something hollywood or the cheap crap.

I guarantee you few know what its like here. Dont take any cheap crap! It will last a few weeks and it will be useless. Conditions here are extremely harsh. Even the Surefires here last a short while if your a field type.

It would be in your favor to have numbers. So if you can afford another light get it or a backup. I've got a selection here and they are pretty much trashed after 9 months and I got 3 more months to go.

You are in for a rude awakening here. JRTC or NTC cannot even be used in comparison but at least its a reference.

The newest LED technology lights would have been best in my case. Not sure about yours.
