I'm thinking about a bipod from my AR556.
The hand guard is not the tactical kind. It just has round holes top and bottom. I do not want to change out the hand guard. What would work to hang a short Picatinny rail under it?

You really should free float it if you want to use a bipod. You will experience POI shifts with a bipod mounted to the barrel.

Red dot and BUIS, why do you want a bipod?
On a precision rifle with scope and free float I would understand. |

But with a steady rest I can till get 1" at 100 yards - occasioinally. But 3" regularly. And no, I don't want it attached to the barrel. I'd like to find a Picatinny rail that will mount on the bottom of the fore guard. Big round holes? If there is such a thing? PS: Sorry about posting this in the wrong spot. My bad. Your handguard is attached to the barrel. So attached to it is attached to the barrel.
You can get a Magpul Mlok handguard that drops in pretty cheap and attach the bipod with Mlok if that's what you want. |

Those plastic handguards are soooo outdated. Why not replace the fixed front sight with a low pro gas block ($25 or less), swap out that plastic guard with a free float handguard ($110-$200 depending on which you prefer) and slap on a set of folding sights?
I found a set of these folding American Tactical polymer sights for $24.95 at a local shop. The pics on that page are not good at all. These sights are sleek as hell, super low profile, not blocky at all and work perfectly. The rear sight has 2 apertures too. I would eventually change out that stock too. |
