I have been looking at getting a VHG for my middy and see that there are basically 2 styles of VHG's, the ergnomic and the generic (ie. circular) grips. Any pros/cons of each style?

Yeah.  Don't choke the chicken.

I know an old SF dude whose VFG is a handstop mde by putting a bolt through standard handguards.  It works.

I hate finger grooves for any grip because they dictate finger position and your fingers can end up ON the bumps instead of between them when you switch grips or grab quickly.  Finger grooves of any type have no place on firearms IMO.  I use plain front strap on my MIAD and a KAC front VFG.
