I'm building an SBR in .300blk, primarily for a bedside/HD gun. It'll likely get a certain amount of outdoor use around the place, but home and yard will be most of it. I'm thinking about mounting a red dot optic. Which ones does the hive like in the 'cost-effective' category? Budget is about $200. Could go higher if needed.

A Primary Arms or a Holosun in that price range  should be GTG

Start at primary arms/holosun/vortex. Maybe a used comp m2/m3 if you can find one in your price range.

get an aimpoint pro and call it a day.  it will last 40 years so very cost effective in the long run

This is so true, I don't think anyone can completely disagree.

The thing is, if you don't have the money for one ($437), which alternate do you pick?

Get a Primary arms advanced micro dot or a Holosun.

Have two Holosuns and use em on HD carbines, both are 403gl. Great little optic, but mounts suck. Both of mine now sit in ADM mounts.

At $219 this is my choice for 300BO SBR/Pistol.  Nice big horseshoe for close in.  Precision center for longer out with ranging.  It works well in conjunction with a magnifier, but I took my magnifier back off as it is on a <100 yard gun, and the magnifier requires my eye to be in a specific spot, which slows me down.

I run a Vortex Strikefire II on my HD AR. It’s a pretty good optic. MSRP is $230 but you can normally find them in the $150 range.

Aimpoint PRO.  Last I checked, you can find multiple models on the EE sub $400.

Are you open to the idea of a 1x Prism sight?

If so, then Vortex Spitfire 1x DRT is fantastic and $199

Would suggest also looking at the Primary Arms Cyclops as well.

It’s a no-brainer at that price point.

$100 FDE Micro Dot

I put one of these on a friend's rifle using a leftover Vortex Crossfire Red Dot mount (Aimpoint Micro pattern).

I want one now.

Get one of the Rotary knob PA MD.

I've got a couple Pros, MRO's etc... but this thing impresses me and sits on my HD .300 blk. I've got no problems trusting it.

I just got one of those and am really looking forward to taking it out.  I find the chevron work better with my astigmatism than the typical dot, especially under 3x magnification.

For the OP, Primary Arms, Holosun, or grab a PRO or MRO from the EE if you have a few extra dollars.

Truglo Trutec.  Look on ebay.  102 delivered for the last one I got a month ago.  Shake awake, 2 MOA dot, two mounts (low and high - high will cowitness) 2032 battery and decent batt life.  I have one on my Scorpion and its been on there for 15 months same battery with no issues.  Highly recommend.

If I’m using a Primarh Arms or Holosun for just shotgun - still need to replace the mount ?

I say go with Primary Arms Advanced Micro Dot Removable Base. $120 on sale right now and a lifetime warranty. With their quality AND that warranty for that price ... dang hard to beat. You could buy almost 3-4 of these for the price of an Aimpoint Pro.

Or buy 2 for half the price of an Aimpoint PRO and you’ve got a back up

If you want though, Aimpoint PRO is a solid choice if you choose to spend more.

Very well made, quality tested, and lifetime warranty.

Incredible value from an Awesome Company!

I do like the AimPoint Pro, but it is pretty heavy & bulky compared to the PA Micro Dot, especially if you are putting it on a pistol or SBR.

Holosun HS510C or the slightly more expensive/efficient HE510C.
