What would be the best iron sight in terms of functionality as a stand rear sight aside from the carry handle type? Thanks.

Chopped carry handle or similar commercially made sight. They are more rugged than the flip up models.

Matechs BUIS are OK, there're better sights available but they get the job done.
they're a bit heavy, easy to use but also cheap and easy to find.

the best BUIS in my opinion is the KAC 600m but it's quite expensive

LMT for fixed KAC or Troy for folding.

Fixed? Daniel Defense DD 1.5 is a great fixed standalone. It's cheap, simple, and rugged.

Folding? For a pure just-in-case BUIS I like the Matech. They're cheap (1/2-1/3rd of a troy or KAC) and semi durable. While there are issues if one is constantly flipping it up and down, as a BACK UP it's a good bang for the buck.

Also decent is the Magpul MBUS. A few months ago someone did a torture test on a bunch of rear BUIS and the MBUS fare among the top.

The BEST would be the KAC or Troy, but the value per dollar just isn't there.

Agreed (assuming OP wants a fixed sight).

I might go for a folding due to a possible optic purchase in the near future. How about ARMS buis? As stand slone are they any good?

Folding, get either Troy or KAC.

i like the Troy folding di-optic rear. the diamond just helps me line up faster and more accurately.

i am using an HK style front with it though. i don't know how it would be with a regular AR front sight..........
