I don't know what you consider cheap....but you can't go wrong with a Mueller 8-32x44 target dot. It is an awesome scope for under $250. |

under 300 is best for me you have this scope? wanting to hit a softball at about 5 to 600

Cheap and long range usually don't go together very well. Most cheap scopes don't track worth a crap. In LR shooting the most important thing is for your scope to track correctly and to return to zero. Other wise the turrets are useless.
Your three best options are: The Bushnell Elite Tactical from MIdway 10x (the cheapest get the MIl/ MIl model from midway) The SWFA SS 10x or 12x (has the best reticle) The Weaver Grand Slam Tactical 3-10x40 from Midway. All of these three are good quality scopes made in Japan. Make sure you get something that the turrets match the reticle. All three of these are available in mIl/mil. |

I needed a scope for a savage 12 223 and I read nothing but good reviews on it, so I gave it a try. - The glass is super clear for the price range - it holds zero no problem - the cross hairs and dot are small enough not obstruct pinpoint shots - The turrets and side focus are smooth and positive to operate - picture is still clear on full zoom I pick flies off paper @ 100 yards using it....so a golfball is very doable at the range you specified as long as your gun is capable and you are able. The other scopes mentioned are very nice choices too and are worth looking into as well. |

I had that same scope mounted on a 700 in 300 RUM, the Mueller. Scope came on the rifle when I got it. Didnt know what the first owner put through it, but when I got it it still worked well and had decent repeatability. Agreed, for the price, its not a bad option.
On the other end, may also want to look at the Millett 4-16. Lot of internal adjustmnet, around 90 I believe. The Nikon Monarchs have great glass for the pricepoint, but the BDC reticle is way too thick for smaller targets at distance. I have a 5-20 BDC, and the glass is really clear.

I just picked up a Primary Arms 4-14x and love it. I have it on a Rem 700 in 308 and that is one awesome scope. Only have access to a 300yard range now, but after getting this scope Im looking for a longer range now.
I have several P.A. scopes and have had zero issues. |

The scope needs to return to zero and track accurately to be good for LR shooting. Almost any budget scope will hold zero and not fog. When you start dialing those turrets is where you see the quality. The fit, finish, features, durability, and quality of construction also get better with higher dollar scopes. The thing you have to decide for yourself is what is good enough for you. It's the law of diminishing returns. |

I don't know how they do at long distance, but they're not too expensive. Burris is offering a $50 rebate on their E1 series of Fullfield scopes. I ordered this one with lighted reticle, but it isn't here yet. I do own a few Burris scopes and am happy with them. They're in your price range.

well i have a few hundred to spend just seeing whats oout there before i buy, would you guys recommend a 6x24 or 8x32.
