Is it normal for a rear sight to have to be adjusted so far left from center to get a zero. It sure looks weird when i go to shoot it. I'm a left hander. Thanks again guys

That is common. If your front sight base is canted, the rear sight looks like that. I have one that is pegged to the left, and one is pegged to the right.
Yours still has plenty of range for most conditions though. Use a paint pen to mark the zero. ETA: With the way demand has gone up, I bet this gets even more common as builders rush to get stuff out the door. |

Mine is the same way, and I have my doubts that it is correct. I also haven't zeroed it correctly yet.

Of course this is the only one that is like that i have. and yes it is my new colt 6920 and it is zeroed. Built June of 2008

That isn't bad at all, there is a reason they have adjustable sights. It is nice if you only have to go a click or two to center your shots, but it is within spec if it zeroes.
You can see the fsb is definitely canted to the right. But if you can get it zeroed, well zero is zero
It looks canted to the right, but wouldn't that require the rear sight to be moved right instead of left to zero? |

Don't know?.That seems like a long way off for a new gun. If it is the normal for these guns i will have to live with it. Sure wish it would be the one that is close to perfect. Thanks again

My new RRA A2 upper is way worse than that. It is almost maxed out to the right. I am sending it to RRA for repair next week. It shoots straight now, but its so far right it bothers me.

I wonder how they will fix it? Maybe i will call colt again and tell them what is wrong or bothering me. They are already sending new hand guards and dust door. maybe they can help i will call again Monday and see what they say. I really hate to show people my new rifle and they say and it came like that

Its not canted the spec for military rifles is 10 clicks left or right windage to be accepted.If it was canted you would have windage adjustments in the17 18 19 click range or more.It could very well be a mis indexed barrel.If the FSB is canted this is a way to see.Turn the rifle upside down and see if it balances perfectly while its on a flat surface with the front and rear sight ears.
Try to push a piece of papaer under the front ears that will tell you if its sitting flush.The easiest way to make sure a barrel is straight is to shim the index pin in its receiver slot by using a half moon cut of aluminum from a soda or beer can that will shore it up nice and tight and will be perfectly straight. |

I've seen POI shifts of up to an inch or more at 25 yards switching between PMC .223 55 FMJ and XM193 5.56 55 FMJ. I don't know about zero shifts between other types of grain weights. I don't know if it is the pressure difference or what. It was almost a straight windage shift too.
So what does all of this "excessive windage" needed to zero mean? Put one type of ammo through it and it might zero another 8 clicks over toward center and you'd be jumping up and down happy. What if you fired 3K of rounds through your new gun with the ammo that shoots toward center, and then you get some different ammo and your gun picks up 10 more clicks of windage to zero? Would you think your rifle was broken? Would you think the ammo was junk? On a gun with the sights that high over the receiver, you can make some pretty significant zero shifts by canting the gun. Talk to some highpower shooters sometime I'd be more worried where the bullets hit than where your sights are. Can you hit the target? Brett |
