512 waterproof to 10 ft
552 waterproof to 33 ft

512 not night vision compatible

i would get a 512.  unless you really want the nv option and have the money to buy an nvg setup.

As everyone else said the only real difference is the NV settings.

One thing you might to do is to keep an eye out for 552's on EE.  If you are patient many times you may be able to buy a used 552 for about the cost of a 512 or less!

I missed a screaming deal on one last week, guy was selling a 552+ ARMS 40L for $250, so keep your eyes peeled.
