Whats the difference between the 2? Is it battery type only?

yes the 551 takes N type batteries and the 552 takes AA's get the 552

much longer battery life

I have both the 551 and 552, and yes the 551 takes the 1.5 v N-type batteries w/ out to 200 hours use a set, but it is also about 1 inch shorter in length, I believe around 4 inches, compared to the 552 at around 5 inches and up to 1100 hours on the AA batteries. Other than that they have the same features.

I honestly don't know. I already have other optics so I'm not in a hurry. If you're optic free then I'd say get one of the older models now. I prefer the lighter weight of the smaller one.

On your site a 551 plus Larue mount is $454, and a 552 plus Larue is $514. Arguments about the quality of ARMS levers aside, will the 553 retail for over $515?

Yes, MAP is $579 I believe.

If you are going to be using it in very cold temps I would definatley get the 552.The lithiums are supposed to work better in cold weather.

I would go with the 552 anyway just for battery life issues.Shop around in the EE I have seen some killer deals on 552's lately.

Why are you looking at the 55x series anyways? The only features I can find are extra depth protection (I don't plan on taking a swim with my rifle) and night vision compatable. Is there something I'm missing here?

I have the 551. I like the smaller size. 552 does have much longer battery life but I don't see any reason for that unless I was on an extended operation in the field. 200 hours is enough for me but I rarely have it on more than an hour at a time and just about always have access to extra batteries. In the case that my batteries fail I have my buis.

All of the Eotech Models will mount to your flat top with out any type of mount..

The standard AR-15.com answer will always be "get both".

I bought a 551 from C4iGrant of GandR Tactical because I'm just going to use it for my backup carbine plus I'm planning to get a NV later on when I completed my current AR projects.

I also was about to get the 552 for my main carbine but since the 553 are coming out now, I'll get the new model instead only if they came out with a different mounting system (I don't like the ARMS levers that they have now).

Most of the members here are not rich, everyone here got the Black Rifle Disease (BRD) which makes you get both, or if possible all of it.

In some areas the N batteries are hard to get, but some areas like mine they are available in groceries, drug stores, Walmart, electronic stores, etc.

My Duracell spare batteries are labeled medical and might be more available at drug stores and medical supplies.

If it's hard to find in your area they are always available from your EOTech dealer and there are a lot of Internet on-line places that sells them (even e-Bay).

Try to Google or Froogle it and you will see a lot of sources.

have you considered a 512. it takes the same battery as a 552 but does not have nv compatibility. I figured you already had a 551 so you have the nv feature. Unless your in search for another NV optic then splurge for the 552. I am considering a 552 as well but i really don't need the NV feature

I went with the 551. Good enough battery life for my needs and it's shorter length allows more room for a BUIS without spending money on more rails.

Model 551 is less than $60 than the 552.

The MSRP of 551 is $419 and the 552 is $479 per EOTech's website.

It's possible to get $100 or more discount from the MSRP of the 551 if you really look hard for a good deal.

The N cells are just fine.

I buy my N cells from Batterstation.com for $0.75 each. I have also been able to find them at most local stores.

I put my N celled Eotech in the freezer until nice and frozen (a few hours) and it turned on with no problem. I also di it with it already turned on and left it on in the freezer for a few hours. Neither had an efect on performance.

The N cell size is just perfect and there is no gain in the AA for what most people or LEO's will notice in real life.

I dont want it close to my BUIS

The 551 cost less! Now if we can get it another inch smaller.

BTW here in Punta Gorda FL I had a hard time finding batteries

But after bitching they carry them now Walgreens

If size and weight are an issue for whatever your putting it on,
then I'd go for the 551 .
An inch doesn't sound like much length to save,but it can be
with some weapons.

I prefer the 552 for commonality of batteries.

I've been trying to convert all of my power using equipment to
rechargeable AA batteries.

Try getting a good price on a flashlight ,NVGs ,communication equipment,
GPS,and whatever other items you want all with N type batteries that
are rechargeable .

If you accomplish that ,try finding N type batteries after a disaster.

If you do choose the 551 ,you can always just stock up.
I just find using AAs easier overall.

I can't wait for the war in Iraq and Afghanistan to end so; A.) We can bring our people home, and B.) so black and OD green accessories and tactical gear will be "in style" again.

I just don't like the desert tan 553 model.
