I just remembered I have an older, but not that old Matte black Leupold Vari-X III, 3x10.5 with an adjustable objective mounted on a .270. Any reason I shouldnt use this on my 20in AR? Or should I go with a more "tac" style scope.

Should be a good scope for medium to far distance - if you get a mount that works with the eyerelief.  Plus allows you to shoot for a while and decide what you want before you spend the money.

That scope should work fine.  I used one for a little while and really liked it.
