I have an 11.5" 1:7 twist barreled flat top upper that needs optics.  The upper has a KAC 300 meter folding rear and Troy folding front sight.  I have ruled out EoTech and am down to either an Aimpoint M3 (with LaRue cantilever mount) or an ACOG.  If I go the ACOG route I will likely go with a LaRue mount and either a TA-31A or TA-31RCO-M4.  Candidly, the gun will be used for targets inside 100 yards and only for fun.  Both packages are somewhat expensive and I am wondering if the price of the ACOG is worth the difference.  Any thoughts, opinions or comments would be appreciated.  And no, I cannot buy both.  Thanks, Mark

I have both ACOGs and Aimpoints.  For your situation I would prefer the Aimpoint.  Others may very well prefer something else.  Watch-Six

Do you know anybody who owns them? You could ask to slap their optics on your rifle and see what you like best before you drop cash.

I'm going to run a TA31F on my Noveske 10.5 CQB upper when paper work is finished.  For the reason that MSTN listed....  That 4x is nice for head shots.

I agree.  Using an ACOG on a rifle that has a 10" barrel because you are shooting from a vehicle is a lot different than using a 10" barrel because you are clearing rooms.

I've met a few guys with short dots on their 10.5s. They liked the setup.

What about a Compact ACOG and LaRue mount?

Somebody enlighten me please. What is a "short dot?"

Thanks.

Schmidt and Bender - Short Dot Scope

It's a 19 oz, $2000, 1.1-4x scope. Super snazz.

The rest of the world has known about Short Dots for a while, but ARFcom just now found out.

Thank you all for the input.  I suppose I need to "borrow" both and give them a try.  Thanks also to the EE dealers for their input and insight.  I will be calling soon enough.  Mark

For the price of the S&B short dot, you can get both.
It's tradition, ya know

If you can't buy both now, then get the ACOG it is cooler  and more expensive, thus will be easier to get the Aimpoint later ;-).

Other than that, I like the Aimpoint better with in 70 yards, the ACOG TA11 for either off the muzzle to a dozen yards and then 30 yards plus (is a soft hole - where you are using a X3.5 optics a little closer than one would wish and for my eyes the BAC works GREAT under a dozen plus yards).

For anything much past a few hundred yards, hard to beat a nice Mk4 Leupold or LRT .... or even little targets at 100 yards.

You could mount them both on the rifle at the same time and it would weigh about the same as the Short Dot.

But then again, the clarity on the Short Dot is unbeatable.
