The Simmons mid to high end is usually pretty good for casual use on light recoiling rifles.  SWFA (www.riflescopes.com) has the SImmons WTC18, 6.5-20 X50.  durable, tracks well, reasonably clear for about 100 bucks.  It's long and bulky, but works great on my varmint calibers.  The Simmons ATV line was really good, and was on clearance for about 80 bucks- i use then =m on my .22s.  I think Cabelas is also clearancing the Whitetail Exedition scope, which are almost as good as a B&L Elite 3200, for about 100 bucks.

I agree, the upper end Simmons seem to work out pretty good for most folks here.  I have an Aetec, and I thinks it's a great value.
