Guys, I need a little help. I want to buy an ACOG for my M4gery with a 14.5 barrel, but I can't decide on which one to get. I snapped a few pics of the new toy, but they were all taken inside my office since it's 9pm at night. I will take better pics outside when I get a chance.

Anyway, here's the specs, please help with the optics:
LMT lower w/ RRA NM 2-stage trigger, Hogue/RRA grip
CMT Upper w/ CMT chrome lined bolt assembly, 14.5" Colt M4A1 barrel, and Perm. Phantom

I had an EOTech on my last one, and I'm looking for something with magnification this time, and besides, I just like the way the ACOGs look!

TA-31F

Calibrated for 14.5" barrels IIRC...

(I have an idential upper  - nice aren't they...)

First off, great looking rig!

I've had great results with the extremely generous eye relief of the TA11 series, as well as the TA47 Mini.

Currently I own a TA11, a TA11D, and a TA47-2 mini and enjoy them all.

TA11D and 47-2:

Thanks for the replies, I was thinking a TA31F, just wanted to make sure. Thanks for the pics too, it always helps to see what you're looking at actually mounted on a weapon.

Check out the TA-31 M-4 RCO.

I like mine. Came from G&R Tactical (C4igrant)

I prefer the donut reticle of the TA31

The F uses the chevron, and the RCO a combination chevron and 'hash marks'

It is more about the reticle look than other factors as they can almost all be zero'ed to your carbine

Here they are:

The RCO....

The TA31....

and the TA 31 F model....

It's funny that you mention the TA31RCO-M4 because right after I typed that last reply, I was looking at it on trijicon.com.

Does it matter that it's designed for a 16" barrel?

redfisher,

After looking at the different reticles you posted, I think I actually like the TA31F the best. As far as aiming purposes, I assume you just center the donut over whatever you want to hit? And then with the TA31F, would you put the tip of the Chevron right *under* what you want to hit? Is this right?

I don't know how they figure that unless they add the flash suppressor.

A real M-4 is 14.5 and it's the version for the Marines.

Danny

ETA: I have both the donut and the RCO (in the TA31). The hash marks in the RCO are not as pronounced in the pic as through the optic IMO.

for cqb you just lay the donut on your target.

but the manual states that top of the donut is for 100yds

I may take home an RCO, but for GP, my favorite is the TA44R-4.

Be well!

Yes for the 100yd shot (donut)

the size of the donut (4moa outside and 2 inside) means you can position the bottom outside ring (6 o'clock position) on your target for 200yd, and the 'hash  marks'below that for progressively longer increments of 100.

sounds confusing but actually works quite well

This is the essence of BDC - bullet drop compensation - which "allows you to dial in a range and hit your point of aim without any holdover once the scope is zeroed in"

a feature available on many ACOGs Their webpage has some valuable information on the subject

There is also some great info on BAC- or Bindon Aiming Concept - this is the concept of two-eyes-open shooting where you see the magnified image with the reticle superimposed over the target (see their Flash Demo)

very intersting stuff, and a couple of the features that contribute to the ACOG being above the crowd.

Lastly, I read recently that Trijicon substantially increased their manufacturing capacity a while back and the results are showing in the form of greater availability, and their pricing leveling off.

They are after all not cheap. I paid as much for my TA31 than I did my first Colt LE AR15.

$975 TA31/ $980 Colt (in 2004)

The center of the donut is for 50 yards and bottom for 25 yards due to sight height .... more or less.

Would get the F or new USGI unless shooting close is the most important (at which point like an Aimpoint past 5 yards better).  Myself for an A1 stock still like / have the TA11 with the longer eye relief.

If you want a scope on top of the carry handle , might I suggest a compact acog. I prefer the 2x myself.
I use a TA47-6 on my AR10 A2 carbine.

I have Aimpoint and now just got a almost near new TA31F from another ARFCOM member and it is nice.    The optical clarity is incredible.  I will post a pic once I get my new upper in a few days.

Just purchased a TA31F and mounted it on my Bushmaster M4 (14.5" barrel version) and went to the range with M193 ammo. I was using the tip of the chevron for an aiming point. It was about 14" high at 50yds but groupings were tight I adjusted it many many clicks down and am now dead on at 50 later I may adjust this for 100yds but for now I am leaving it where it is. My question is why was it soooo high at 50 yds? Aren't they supposed top be zeroed at 100 from the factory which means it would be about 1" off at 50. It is mounted correctly. Somebody lend me their personnal experience with this setup.

I geuss what I'm asking is, has anyone else has to do major adjustments to their ACOG out of the box?
