I want to replace it with a different nut, but I cant figure out how to remove the existing one w/o damaging it.

Under the plastic end pc. is something like a C clip I think or just a plan nut that will aloow you to remove it. I had a mount once that lost the plastic cover. I never tried taking it apart but you will see how it's on there.

Your talking about this mount right?




I looked under the little plastic ring on the nut and there's nothing there.  The plastic is there just to keep metal from rubbing against metal.

The outside of the knob has a plastic cover that you have to pry off to get to the nut and spring gizmo.
