I just started to learn about ACOGS and some of the abbreviations, still have tons of questions. The one I want is the TA01NSN and the trijicon webiste is somewhat useless in getting more info.

Thanks!

Thanks! But the hardest part is that I really don't know what to ask exactly, that's why I need to read something then I will have some relevent questions. I pretty much looked at all the optic pages.

thanks for the help new-arguy and glockguy40, i'm stuck between the TA01NSN and TA31, your opinions? I have the M4, I believe the NSN was made for the 16" barrel too?

I have had both and I prefer the TA31 (DOD).

Which to get, in my view, would primarily come down to what you wanted most out of the overall gun.

I find the TA31 much, much more useful. The full time illuminated reticles ability to give a magnified optic close quarter capability (BAC), I think it is about the best general purpose optic you can get for an AR15. Good from anywhere from arms reach to several hundred yards.

The TAO1nsn (and TAO1 for that matter) are both EXCELLENT task specific optics. The more precise reticles and simple range estimating ability of the TAO1 series makes it a great mid to mid-long range optic. These same features which increase its longer range capability, however, severly decreses their usefullness at close range.

I own both and my NSN model rarely gets used.

new-arguy, on the TA31s which one is a better sight, the donut or the chevron in your opinion? Like you mentioned, I believe having a fulltime lighted reticle is a good advantage. I see on the NSN it's black during the day and only yellow at night.

Yeah TA 31 is the way to go. Get one and you will wonder how you got along with out one before.

Hell I am going to build a dedicated 16 inch carbine just to go under mine. Leave the aimpoint on my M4 and call it good.

you know what, the more  I think about it the TA31 is a better choice for me after reading more on scopes and help from new-arguy and glockguy40. Now the hard part is deciding donut or chevron and finding someone who actually carries the TA31 without the high prices.

If you are going to mount it on a flattop, get the chevron (TA31F), it's shipped with a flattop mount and the bullet drop compensator range lines in the scope are designed to be accurate when mounted on a flattop.

If you're going to mount in the carry handle, that's what the donut (TA31) is designed for. If you're going to primarily shoot very long range for targets, etc, probably better off to go with the flattop and get the ta31f. It's mounted closer to the bore and the pointed chevron is a bit more precise for aiming at long distance.

Expect to pay around 75 more for the 31F compared to the 31.

I have the donut mounted on a detachable arry handle. I keep mine with me at work, it makes an excellent patrol rifle.

Could someone explain why certain TA31's have a mount and some without one? I plan on mounting it on my M4's flattop. And if I do get one without a mount included which one do you think is the best choice ( TA51 or ARMS #19 ACOG)?

Thanks!

npd223,
You can buy whatever ACOG you want without paying much attention at all to how the BDC is "supposed" to be callibrated. You can work almost any of them to work for you. For instance, I zero 1" high with my TA31 on a flat top and the BDC is within moa all the way out to 600. Theres a few scopes that get screwy, but you can make modifications to your zero and make almost any of them work. Dont let the suggested mounting and barrel lengths dictate which scope you choose.

Go here to see just what I mean...

Thanks for the link to the ACOG BDC Chart that I see every time I go into Optics. I'd have never found it otherwise. Isn't that why it's tacked?

I can't tell you how much I would like to buy a TA31F for a decent price, the TA01NSN looks better and better everyday, plenty in stock and excellent price. It's hard to wait, I want it now
