Probably a dead horse, but after 30 minutes of searching and reading, I still haven't gotten the answer I am looking for.

Looking for recommendations with the following criteria

20" or 24" RRA Varmint upper, A4 style

variable power
good quality, but under $500 or around that price
recommendations on mounting on aforementioned upper
preferably in the 3.5-10 or 4.5-14 power range

This will most likely be a seldom shot paper puncher, 0-600 yds
It is my Dad's Christmas present.  My mon agreed to buy him the optics and I'm building the AR

My fav. would be what I just picked up:  Leupold Mark 4 PR 4.5-14x40.  You will have to pay closer to $575 though...

 FYI; these are vari-x, and not VX series scopes.

 A 4-12 VX-II A/O  would be a better choice for less. A/O , clicks, fine duplex, less money.
