I have a Bushmaster A1 upper and have been told a Colt 3 power scope will not fit the site channel on the carry handle. Can someone verify this for me?

Whoever told you that was wrong.  The channel on A1s is the same A2s (heck the scope was developed for A1 type uppers).

It fits fine in a Bushy C7 upper (enhanced A1) - Been there done that.
