FWIW, (my first view of this post, btw) your somewhat contradicting yourself, first ya say this:
I want to use it for varmints at long ranges followed by this: I have used Leupolds in the past and been very happy with them, then ya close with this in your second post: I guess I will get the bushnell As I only know one brand of scopes for long range shooting, the Leupold, and it appears you are willing to spend as much as the rifle, which would probably get ya a good Leupold, why would you buy a Bushnell, which although probably a fine scope, has no where near the kind of following of a Leupold when it comes to long range accuracy??????? No flaming intended here, notice I didn't even comment on the 1/9 vs 1/8 and the "versatile on ammo" issue, which is somewhat iffy too, especially where long ranges are invloved. (long ranges are 500-1000 yards IMO) Perhaps others felt the same way, it's kind of puzzling, your post that is......., btw get the Leupy! Mike |

Don't really know how much the Bushy varminter is, but if you want the scope to cost as much as the rifle there are plenty of choices. Especially the Luepy line, Nikon's or the SS (good price) from SWFA.

I have a Bushy Varminter and put a Tasco Super Sniper 10x on it, it's a great combination.

I have a Nikon UCC Monarch 6.5-20x44 on my Bushy Varminter mounted in Leupold QRW medium rings on top of the supplied riser blocks....I really like my Nikon and all my other scopes are Leupolds.

I just got turned on to the Nightforce NXS scopes. More specific the 2.5 -10x illuminated NP1 reticle. I would say either that one or a Leupy MR/T M3. As for the mount, there is only one choice I would go with and that is LaRue Tactical They have a dual throw lever cantilever scope mount that is just awesome. Best mount on the planet.

Went Sage Rat shooting in Oregon this spring with my buddies and they all had the Weaver 4x16-42 scopes with the fine crosshair and they were great. I'll be getting one of those of the Nikon 6.5x20 - 44 with the target dot. I've used both and they are both bright and clear.

Leupold or Nightforce. Don't even think about anything less if you want good glass.

I was joking about the Bushnell.....sheesh.
As to magnification, 3-10 variable is what I had in mind. As to barrel twist, the 1/8 barrel on the rra would be better for the heavy bullets, I know this, but the really light stuff would do better in the 1/9. I want to be able to shoot the cheap 40 grn remington value packs if I can't afford Black Hills. The last time anyone in my house bought a scope, it was before the AWB was passed and at the time, Tasco was thought of as a cheapy brand. Yet I have heard many positive comments on the Super Sniper scopes. Hmm. This is the one I think I will get... |

Excellent choice, but don't get it from CTD, try here instead, believe they'll save ya a few bucks: www.premierreticles.com/?uid=5465&page=1754, ya might even check out the newer Gen II recticle or going up a notch to the 4.5x14x40mm.

My first pick for your rifle woud be a SpringField Armory scope that has the hash marks out to something like 600 yards for your specific caliber. Leupold just came out with a new reticle for their VariX-III that is essentially the same thing.
Personally, I spend more money on optics than most do on guns. |

I think you may want a little more magnification than a 3.5-10 for varmint past 200 yards. Certianly will not give you enough power for those at the 400 yard range.
I have two Leupold VX-III 6.5-20X40 LR on my varmint guns. Cost around $500. |

I have a cheap BSA Mil-Dot Illuminated 6-24 Scope, and I love it. The only problem is the clicks are 1/8 which can be a bitch if you adjust wind and elevation alot. When I shoot at 600 yards with my Bushmaster Varminter it took awhile get the elevation up, but it was cheap. And it keeps it's zero. Now I just use this for target shooting. I strongly suggest this scope. I got it from SWFA for about $100.

I too am about to buy a scope for a 24 inch AR-15 mines a RRA upper and a Bushy lower I have larrowed my field down to a weaver 6-24x42 and and a sightron of the same power but I am limited to only 350 for a scope but if the sky was the limit I would get the best LEUPOLD in the 6-24 power I could find.

The scope look high to me I have the same Rings setup (#19A & w/ #21) with MARK4 10x and I mount it right to the A3 flat top and have a great cheek weld. The set-up(s) that I have (A.R.M.S. #19A, #21 STANAG Rings & Bushmaster's Mini Risers) have work real well for me. I haven't had any problems achieving a proper cheek weld. |
