In looking at ACOGs, I keep coming back to the TA31.  Is the point of the donut reticle that it can be used longer eye relief with both eyes open for close up, and move your head closer to the optic and "wink" for longer shots?  Is the donut visible with your head slightly further away from the optic?

The illuminated donut is visible when you pull your head back a bit, but the view through the scope is occluded somewhat.  I find this helps with the BAC for close up work - not distrated by a clear view through the scope.  I believe it will work with any of the ACOG reticles, not just the famous donut.

I have the donut and the triangle. You don't have to "wink" for either at any distance (both eyes open. Full peripheral)
The triangle is better (easier) at hitting one inch circles at 100 yards.
If you don't have time to aim, either reticle will hit center mass at 300 yards.
If you are moving while shooting, the donut should be your choice (no angles on a circle).

what barrel length/ammo is the TA31 intended for?

20" 55gr (milspec velocity)  for the BDC.
Others more knowledgeable than I have said the BDC is a relative thing.
Figure out your scope at all distances, bullet sizes,  barrel lengths and velocity.

Is there an ACOG more suited to a 16" barrel with xm193?  Will it still have the lighted center point for close in?

There aint much difference out to 200 yards with the 20" xm193 carry handle ACOGs on a carry handle of a 16" using xm193.
Actually; no difference.
IMHO

The NSN and some of the TA31s are calibrated for 62 grain in a 14.5 inch barrel and word is they work well with 16 inch rifles and 55 grain ammo.
