ACOG 3.5 vs 4 power

Hi all,

Any thoughts on pro's & con's between the two? I'm thinking about a TA31 or TA11, either donut or chevron for a std A2 config (20" & charging handle).

You really can't go wrong with either one, although myself, I prefer the TA31

If you are shooting nose to charging handle on an A2, you don't get much out of the extra eye relief of the TA11.

I use a TA11 on my AR10 because of the greater recoil from the .308. For any AR15 though, a TA31 makes more sense. Smaller, lighter, more magnification, larger field of view, and cheaper.

TA11 has greater eye relief. This greater eye relief allows the shooter to have a greater range of head movement behind the optic so you can still see. Some might find this a little faster on target and easier to use from awkward shooting positions.

TA31 has a very nice feild of view, the widest of all ACOGs short of one of the 1.5x Compacts. It is smaller and lighter, has .5x greater magnification and a ever so slightly larger reticle. Some may find the slightly larger reticle a little easier to pick up quickly.

It is difficult to go wrong with either. It is also difficult to find either. I would go with whatever is more available. if either. And eventually, GET BOTH!

The TA11 is also a little brigher due to the optical arrangement.

The TA11 has a larger exit pupil than the TA31. Hence it's brighter.

Another way to think about it is this: the TA11 has the same objective lens diameter, but less magnification, so it will be brighter. Two ways of saying the same thing.

Both scopes have exit pupils that are larger than the ability of the human eye to dilate, so even though this is technically correct, I doubt you could tell the difference. I have thought that the TA11 reticle was better lit though and wondered if the extra fiber optic tube played a role in that.

I was gonna say something like that, someone (maybe it was Bart then too) pointed out that the slightly larger objective lens would not make any difference to naked eyes (unless you got an eye transplant from an eagle or hawk).
My personal experience bears this out as well, I can't discern much difference between the two, to me it's akin to the display cards performance differences of 110 frames per second vs. 120 frames per second, the difference may be there but it sure isn't meaningful to the user.

I was stuck between the 11 and 31 for a long time. I think I made a good choice with the 11 since the further eye releif is really needed with a full length stock, body armor, and plate combo to get the quickes and best shots off in different shooting positions.

In that case, 3.5x is almost 4x, and 1.5" is almost 2.4". I guess there's no difference between the TA11 and TA31 after all.

Try out both. The TA11 will appear brighter.
