The TA01 NSN has the tritium iron sights built into them for a back up. That's the only advantage of the NSN model I can think of. The regualr TA01, I believe, has a red reticle, which most will prefer. Amber stands out better to the eye, but the red will stand out better in most environments as the Amber is more easily washed out. I beleive that the TA01 also has the entire reticle in red, but the NSN only has the center section of the crosshairs illuminated in yellow. Pesojnally, I'd prefer the regular TA01.

Yep, all those listed above, and the TA01NSN comes with a TA51 flat top adapter.

There is one other (maybe significant?) difference between the TA01 and the NSN model, the bullet drop lines. The TA01 reticle is designed for M193 ammo out of a 20" barrel with the scope mounted in the carry handle. The NSN is designed for M855 out of a 14.5" barrel with a flat top mount (Trijicon's website says 16" barrel, but it does talk about SOPMOD, so I figure they meant 14.5".) This can mean significant differences in how accurate those lines are at distance. If you aren't using either kind of ammo however, you will need to understand the ballistics of your chosen round versus the design round.

That's kinda what I'm thinking about. I know I won't be using a 20" barrel, but I really don't need the extras that come on a NSN. I seen a place selling a 01 for $550.00 new and the NSN for $750.00 and was contemplating picking one up. What to do ...what to do... |

I love my NSN. Never used the tritium option yet. The optics are excellent. FOV is very good and all images are crystal clear. Don't have any experience with the TA01 (yet).

Well, I'm using a plain TA01 with an ARMS #10 mount on my 16" LMT M4 flat top upper, if that helps any. I figure the lines are close enough for my purposes. I'd go for the TA01 and get a flat top adapter and just realize that I'm in the "general vicintiy" in terms of the drop lines. It sure as hell isn't a bullseye rifle.......  Spend the savings on some other cool toy. The back up sights on the NSN are joke in my opinion as well.....Scott ETA: I also think that the NSN is rated for use with night vision, where the regular TA01 is not. I think that is the primary reason for the yellow as opposed to red...... |

I have the TA-01 and am happy with it.
I didn't feel the need for the iron sights on top of the ACOG. I like the TA-01 reticle and features. I didn't want to spend an extra $200 for things I didn't need. |

I love my new TA01/TA51. I have mine mounted on a 16" flat top, but haven't had it out to sight in yet. I don't use mine to defend my life so the NSN was a little overkill for me and I doubt if I'm a good enough shooter to tell a HUGE difference in the scope markings. I'm still holding out for the Group buy on a TA31F with BAC and the ever popular "Donut of Death". It will be closer calibrated to a 16" flat top receiver.

One other option with the TA01NSN is that it allows the owner to replace the iron sights with a mini-red dot sight like a Docter or Optima with the use of a mounting plate. I also hated the backup iron sight, so I replaced my sight with a red dot sight. This combination gives you a great magnified optic with BDC on the standard TA01NSN and a backup red dot for quicker response time.
I've had problems trying to get use to using a TA31 so I went this route instead. |

Jetwc - I had problems with my eyes adjusting properly when using the TA31 in a confined area (i.e. house, interior of a building ...etc), but it or I worked great when using the scope outdoors. Nosmik was correct, in BDC was referring to bullet drop compensator.

The TA01 is better than the TA01NSN in many ways, but none of them are as good as a BAC model (TA31/TA11).

Troy, I'd love to have you elaborate on the reasons the TA01 is better than the TA01NSN, if you wouldn't mind. I really value your opinions and experiences.
I personally had trouble using the BAC on a friend's TA31. I'm a right-handed shooter, but left-eye dominant. I thought that might have something to do with it. Maybe I just need more time to learn how to use the scope though. Anyway, I bought a TA01 yesterday. I had tried the TA01NSN and liked it okay, but I much prefer the red over the amber of the NSN model. I also felt the back-up optic wasn't worth the extra $$. Can't wait to get the TA01 in my hands. It's my first ACOG. It's my understanding the TA01 does NOT include a mount. Is that correct? If I need to buy a mount, I'll probably look hard at the LaRue stuff followed by ARMS. Any recommendations here? |

Correct, the TA-01 does not come with a flattop mount. It has one allen screw to be used with an A2 mounting.
Don't know about the LaRue stuff, I just stuck mine on a ARMS 19S. www.gandrtactical.com is a site sponsor and sells the 19S with two addtional screws for $109 shipped. |

I used the Trijicon TA51 on my TA01 and it mounted right up, no problem. Why do you prefer the Arms or LaRue over the Trijicon??

Compared to the TA01NSN, the TA01 has the preferred illumination color (red), the better reticule, and it doesn't have the useless iron sights or the non-QD flattop mount, both of which you pay extra for on the NSN even if you don't use them.

When I sold my AR about 5 years ago, I sold my TA01 to a buddy that had a fixed carry handle. He doesn't really like it much and doesn't use it. I didn't want to buy it back because I was going the flat top route with my new build.
HOWEVER, after viewing these posts and Googling around a little bit, it ocurred to me  that the TA51 might be built for that exact purpose  .1. Am I right? Does the TA01 fit the carry handle directly and to a flat top with the TA51? 2. If so, are there mounts -- other than the TA51 for the TA01 Maybe I need to give my old buddy a call... Wolf |

Yes, the TA01 will also fit the ARMS 19 and 19S. LaRue also has a nice looking mount for it.

JETWC, I mentioned the LaRue only because of my recent experience with their fixed BUIS. I am VERY impressed with it and much prefer it over the LMT. The praise for other LaRue products leads me to belive they may well have some advantages over other vendors. (Hey, guys, I'm not trying to turn this into an ARMS vs. LaRue thread. There are already a few of those. )Turns out the vendor (Eagle Firearms) from whom I bought the TA01 gave me a steal of a deal on a 19S too. |

Just remember, an ARMS 19S will allow the ARMS 40 BUIS to be mounted below the ACOG. Using a TA-51 mount will not. |

I've got my TA01 mounted in an ARMS #10. I bought a ARMS #40 froma friend, which luckily had the cut aperature. I didn't really want the cut aperature, but after mounting the BUIS, I realized I NEEDED the cut aperature. It barely clears the bottom of the scope.

True, but you can use the Trijicon mount as long as you use the 40L, which I prefer to the regular 40 because of size. (Plus it looks nicer) |
